Responsibly Aware is an initiative being developed and tested by Stop Soldier Suicide.
We invite you to take part in a research study evaluating the firearm access alert devices shown on our homepage.
Purpose: We're asking whether people set up these devices, share alerts with another trusted adult, and what impact that has. Results will help us decide whether to expand this program, and de-identified findings may be shared publicly.
What's involved: After you receive your device, we'll invite you by email/text to complete a short feedback survey (about 5 minutes) up to three times over about six months.
Voluntary participation: Taking part is completely optional. You will receive and keep your free device whether or not you complete any survey. You may skip any question or stop at any time with no penalty.
Eligibility: You must be 18 or older to participate.
Risks: Risk is minimal. Some questions ask about your experience with the device, including any conversations that happened if someone accessed a firearm. Thinking back on these could occasionally bring up difficult feelings.
Benefits: There is no direct benefit beyond the free device, but your feedback may help improve firearm-safety programs for others.
Confidentiality: We collect your name and email to match your responses across surveys and store them securely. A public summary of findings that may include de-identified quotes will be shared with Stop Soldier Suicide, the general public, and the device manufacturers. Names and identifying details are removed before any report is shared. Your detailed responses will only be kept with Stop Soldier Suicide.
Withdrawing: You can ask us to remove your responses at any time before the summary report is finalized by emailing john.richardson@stopsoldiersuicide.org.
